Free milk in schools

Claim: The provision of free milk in primary schools will be scrapped in Wales

This is false.

Currently the School Milk Subsidy Scheme provides free milk to learners in Reception to Year 2 and subsidised milk to learners in Years 3 to 6. The scheme is administered by the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) on behalf of Welsh Government, but the RPA will stop administering the scheme to Wales after 31 March 2027.

Due to the RPA administration of the scheme ending, the Welsh Government is now consulting on the future of the School Milk Subsidy Scheme.  The consultation asks whether a new Welsh school milk scheme should be established, to replace the RPA scheme from April 2027, or if the free school milk scheme should be discontinued.

Regardless of the outcome of the consultation, milk will still remain available to primary age children through breakfast clubs and at lunchtime via the Universal Primary Free School Meals offer (UPFSM). UPFSM is available to call primary school learners. The consultation can be found here: Future options of the school milk subsidy scheme (SMSS) in Wales | GOV.WALES
