Claim: the Welsh Government is planning to close junctions 25, 26 and 27 on the M4
Recent commentary has suggested the Welsh Government has decided to close three M4 junctions around Newport. That is not the case.
The report published alongside the Deputy Minister for Transport’s statement on 6 October sets out a range of possible options that could be considered to help address congestion and improve reliability on the M4 around Newport.
One of the options identified in the report considers changes to how the existing motorway operates. This includes the full closure of Junction 27 (High Cross) and the closure of the east-facing slip roads at Junctions 26 (Malpas) and 25 (Caerleon). The report also notes that alternative combinations of partial or full closures could be explored further.
Before any decisions are taken, a more detailed technical analysis, and traffic modelling will take place. The Welsh Government has therefore decided to investigate whether these measures are feasible and what their impacts would be for motorists, businesses, and local communities. The Welsh Government has committed to engagement with local communities, local authorities, businesses, stakeholders, and Senedd Members.
